Hammocks, Hammock Chairs, Swings and Accessories

Choosing Among Rope, Fabric and Cotton Hammock Configurations

Depending upon preferences, taste, and available space, we offer two types of hammock. The traditional hammock hangs in a stand or between two posts or trees. The hammock chair or swing hangs from a single suspension point. The hammock chair or swing requires less available space. Depending upon your desired level of comfort and the exposure the hammock will have to the elements, either hammock can be ordered as a Fabric Hammock, Cotton Net Hammock, Nylon Rope Hammock or Olefin Rope Hammock. A variety of accessories are also available. The tutorial below explains the differences between these various hammock options.

Types Of Hammocks

Hammocks come in two general types, traditional hammocks and hammock chairs or hammock swings. Traditional hammocks allow you to lay down and stretch out. They are typically strung between two poles or trees. There are also hammock stands especially built to hold a traditional hammock. A hammock that comes with a stand is known as a Combination Hammock. Every traditional hammock comes in one of two configurations, with or without spreaders. Spreaders are wood or metal bars that "spread" the corners of the hammock to create a flatter surface. Hammocks without spreaders tend to envelope the user like a cocoon. A Yucatan style hammock is an example of a hammock without spreaders. Hammock chairs or swings allow you to sit and swing. They are usually suspended from a tree or building arch or rafter. There are stands but they are less common than the traditional hammock stand. Hammock chairs and hammock swings come in the same two configurations, with and without spreaders. Those with spreaders allow more elbow room so you can read or work.

Types Of Hammock Material

Hammocks are constructed in two general ways, either from fabric or as a woven mesh. Whether constructed of fabric or mesh, the material selected is a trade-off between comfort and durability. Cotton is the softest and most comfortable hammock material whether the hammock is constructed of cotton fabric, cotton mesh or cotton rope. It is also the most susceptible to degradation caused by exposure to weather. Synthetic fabrics are more durable. There are several options. Nylon is popular. Parachute nylon in particular is used to create lightweight, durable fabric hammocks often used for camping. Polyester is another common choice. Olefin fiber is a form of polypropylene that is popular, typically in the form of olefin rope. Olefin is softer than most synthetic fabrics, very light weight and is colorfast since coloring is added during manufacture, not through dyes. Mesh hammocks are usually classified as either Net or Rope Hammocks. Net hammocks have a tighter weave and are made of smaller strands. They are more comfortable but hold less weight. Rope hammocks have a coarser weave and are made of larger strands. They hold greater weight.
